Understand Templates

Templates are the most important things in EasyUC. Templates makes EasyUC able to create Devices and configurations like you need it for your cluster. Thats why it is most important to understand how we work with templates, how we think about templates and how we use these templates.

The first thing when setup EasyUC is, that you need to create templates for each device and each configuration you want to do with EasyUC. For example, you want to be able to create IP Phones 8865 and 8841. Also you want to be able to create Jabber for PC/MAC, Jabber for iPhone, Jabber for Android and Jabber for Tablet. And your cluster has 3 locations.

Then at first, we need to have a Template for each Device and also for each location. Per location we need 6 Templates, in total we need 18 Templates.

WHY TEMPLATES FOR EACH LOCATION?

Because most probably, a 8865 phone in location A has at least another Device Pool that in Location B. Maybe also something else is different but thats the reason why each location need his own template. BUT with our template copy center, it is pretty easy to copy the Template from first Location to all other locations. So if you have 20 Locations, you dont need to create 120 Templates manually.

From which phones should i create a Template?

As first, from each Device which you want to create in EasyUC, we need at minimum 1 in CUCM to be able to create a template from this. If no Device is in CUCM, then we can not create templates.

What we recommend is to create templates from normal users. It dont make sense to create templates from your own phones, because most admin phones are not configured as all others in the cluster. If they are, of course, you could also use your phones to create templates from.

NOTE: Call Forward Destinations will be Part of the Template. Please check before creating a template if the phone has the Forward destinations set like you want to have it. All other phones which will be created with this template will have the same forwards configured. So if the base phone had a forwarding to his own mobile phone at forward busy, then all others which will be created later will also have it. And i guess the guy which was used for the template dont want to get thousands of calls in worst case. So please, check the Forwardings before creating the Templates.

Templates are static – Important to know

If you create a template from a 8865 phone, then we take all the settings from this phone from this moment and save it in our template. If there is any change in CUCM on this phone which was used to create the template, the template in EasyUC will never change.

So our template is only a snapshot from the second in which is was created and has no permanent link to the phone.
